Martha Jane "Mattie" Spencer was the daughter of Dr. Jedidiah Spencer & Hannah
Spencer.  Dr. Jedidiah Spencer was one of the county's doctors.  He never married, but he
took a strong interest in the well being of the African American community.  It was stated by
the family that Hannah was a slave born in South Carolina.  She was sold to Greene
County, Alabama.  Hannah was said to be 1/3 African and 1/3 Native American.  She was
purchased by the Spencer family in the early 1840's.  However, her brother and a cousin
were sold and purchased by someone else.  When she was given to Jedidiah Spencer, he
immediately took a sexual interest in her.

Her two surviving children by him was Martha Jane "Mattie" Spencer & Johnny Frank
Spencer.  Johnny Frank Spencer married a woman named Lou Ella Burton and they had
several children.  Johnny Frank died in Greene County and Lou Ella took her children and
moved to Marshalltown, Iowa.  Martha Jane "Mattie" Spencer married Hillary Wilder of
Pickens County.  The couple settled in Mantua and had several children.  It was said by
both families that neither have met their first cousins, because Mattie Wilder & Johnny
Frank's children were seperated
