| The Snoddy Family originated from Ireland and migrated to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Dr. Samuel Snoddy was the only member from his family that migrated to Greene County, Alabama. He was born in 1809 to Samuel Snoddy & Elizabeth Cowan. He married Elizabeth Jane Morrow and they settled in the Mantua area. However, in that time it was Pickens County. Dr. Samuel Snoddy was a wealthy doctor who owned several slaves. A few of his slaves were his wife's inheritance. There was a large population of Snoddys, which is why they made their own community. Most of the individuals that resided there were Snoddy and Morrow descendants. As for as the black Snoddy's, there is only a few sets of Snoddys. However, several of them claimed they are related to one another. One interesting Snoddy slave was a man named Nimrod Snoddy. According to this descendants, he was not an original Snoddy. In the early 1840's, he escaped from a plantation in South Carolina and made his way to the Snoddy Plantation. It was then said that he somehow begged Dr. Snoddy to purchase him and that is how he became a Snoddy. When slavery ended, Nimrod wanted to distinguish himself from the other Snoddy, which is why he took the surname of Nimrod. He still has Snoddy and Nimrod descendants, because his children married other Snoddys. Nimrod later became a pastor and so did one of his sons, Aaron. Another Snoddy story is that three men named Sam Snoddy, Sam Colvin, & Sam Caldwell were each charged with murdering a white man in 1869. It seems that a white man was traveling the dark dirt road and never made it to his destination. No one actually saw anyone commit the crime. The only evidence the sheriff had was that Sam Snoddy was seen talking to Sam Caldwell, while he was washing some blood off his shirt. It is possible that the blood could have come from any where. The victim was white and the man observed was black. By the end of the week, the three named were each lynched. |
