The Greene & Pickens Black Families Association
The Hill-Rice-Carpenter Family Reunion
This reunion took place in Waco, Texas in June of 2007. The coordinators of this fine
event was the Dunner Family. The family consists of Jeff & his wife, Bessie. Jeff Dunner is
originally from Aliceville in Pickens County. However, Bessie was born in Aliceville in Pickens
County, but her ancestors were born in Greene County. This participants for the reunion are
the descendants of the Hill, Carpenter, and Rice Families. I strongly believe the Hill's
ancestor was Charles Hill, who was born in South Carolina in 1802. He married a woman
named Aggie and several children were born to this union. It isn't known the exact amount of
children, but I have researched about seven. Harrison Hill was one of their sons and he was
born in 1838. Harrison was the coordinator's great-great grandfather. He married a woman
named Jane and had three known children.
Their oldest daughter was named Priscilla, but nicknamed "Silla". She was born in 1867.
On January 12, 1887 she married a man named Ernest Rice. Ernest was born in 1868 to
Alfred & Jane Rice. He was the grandson of Bynum Rice (1808), the great-grandson of
Chaney Rice, who was born in North Carolina in 1787. Ernest & Priscilla Rice only had two
children. A son named Harrison & a daughter named Hannah. Harrison was known to have
several woman and children in his life. It is estimated that Harrison had well over 30 children
by various women. Hannah used to tell her grandchildren that her brother was a rolling
stone. Hannah married a man named Phil Carpenter, whose family came from the Mount
Hebron Precinct. He was born in 1882 to Phil & Hester Carpenter. Phil was the son of
Chelsey & Betsey Carpenter. Phil & Hannah had a son named Ira Carpenter, who happens
to be the coordinator's father. Majority of the people that attend the reunion are descended
from Phil Carpenter & Hannah Rice, however many of the Hill descendants are participating
as well.
The next Hill-Rice-Carpenter family reunion will be held in Memphis, Tennessee in 2009. For
