The Hall & Spencer Family History
The matriarch of the Hall family was Charlotte Hall. She was born in South Carolina in 1820.
It isn't know who her parents or other relatives were. She was either sold and came with a
white family to Greene County. When she arrived, she ended up on the Spencer plantation.
From my research, Charlotte had three children by Dr. Jedidiah M. Spencer of Union. Dr.
Spencer's mother died in 1851, so he was the owner of the Spencer Estate. It was also said
by a descendant of the Spencer family that the doctor's mother had an obsession for fair
skinned slaves. This woman talked about how Candice Spencer would trade and sell the
dark slaves for the lighter ones, which is how Charlotte stayed on her plantation. Dr.
Spencer had several children by black women, since he wasn't married. Once all of
Charlotte's children were born, she carried the Hall name. Something interesting about the
Hall family is that most of them are very fair skinned.
For generations the family has kept their fair skin, blue eyes, and blond hair. In the past
many of the Halls were mistaken for white people. Candice Hall, which was one of
Charlotte's daughters, was very fair skinned. When Candice became of age, she had
relations with a white doctor. Three children came to this union. It seemed that the white
doctor was in love with Candice and when he died, he left her his estate. To this day, the
descendants still have the deeds in their possession. Joe Hall, which is one of the
descendants, was so light that he worked in an all white hotel in Detroit, Michigan. Joe lived
a double life to survive in this world. The Halls were a very hard working family that tried to
survive in a world of prejudice. When their struggles became unbearable, the family moved
to Tuscaloosa County to make a better life for themselves. Several members of this family
are retired school teachers, principals, doctors, & military officers. Not only that, this family is
extremely well educated and believe in succeeding.
