The Frederick Douglas Burton Family
Frederick Douglas Burton was born to Thomas Jefferson Gordon & Matilda
Ann Williamson Burton in March of 1871. It was known throughout the
community that Fred's father was a white man, but he was raised by a black
man named Greene Burton. Greene Burton married Matilda on November 30,
1867 and four other children were born before him and two after him. The
Burtons were sharecroppers and worked very hard for the Miller Family. Fred
learned to read and write at a young age by the Greene County School that was
offered to him.
On September 20, 1890, Fred married the young Mary Davis, who was
nicknamed "Susie". She was the daughter of John Attoway Davis & Charity
Burton. When the young couple got married, Mary's sister, Gertrude Davis,
came to live with them. As he grew older, he became a successful businessman
and landowner in the Union Precinct. In 1909, Fred Burton's aunt, Emeline
Snoddy died. He became the executer of her estate. By then, majority of her
children did not live int the state of Alabama. One of her sons that lived in
Oklahoma City, bargained and sold the 160 acres of land in the estate to Fred
Burton for $75.00. This land was located in section 14 in township 24; Range 2
east, which was in Mantua. He also purchased 40 acres from Providence
Smith & Mary Ann Snoddy Smith for $186.00, which was located in section 11
in township 24; Range 2 east. By 1910, he acquired about 200 acres of land and
lived in a two story white antebellum home. He even founded and financially
supported the Burton Hill School, which he named after his father. Throughout
his life, he attended Johnson Hill Methodist Church in Union.
